Despite a week of turmoil and five starters missing from the lineup due to injuries, Judson showed that you can’t keep a good team down. Seven days after a shocking 22-12 loss to Austin LBJ, the Rockets cranked up their offense for 376 yards while crushing Clark, 34-14.
Running back Kyle Arnell handled the bulk of the running game with 150 yards and two TDs on 24 carries. But Judson coach D.W. Rutledge’s praise went to his reserves. Quarterback David Zunker, filling in for injured Darnell Stephens, engineered Judson’s offense, passing for 93 yards and a touchdown. Randy Morgan, who stepped in for injured fullback Charlie Johnson, rushed for 69 yards and two TDs and added a third score on a 57-yard reception.
“I think it says a lot about their character,” Rutledge said. “The kids worked hard all week and locked in on what they had to do. They’ve always felt like they’re a family and when they come under attack they’re going to come closer together and work things out. “Zunker did a great job of moving the offense. He made some decisions back there and ran well when he needed to. I felt our backfield did super.”
When the offense wasn’t stacking up the yards, the Rockets defense was busy containing the Cougars. They held their opponents under 200 yards for only the second time this season. Judson gave up 185 yards to Clark. They held Killeen Ellison to 155 yards in a 17-0 victory the third week. “We executed the defensive game plan very well,” Rutledge said. “Clark tries to confuse you with a lot of different formations. That’s the way they beat you. Our kids did a fine job of lining up right and reading their offense.”
Week five of the season saw six 200-yard rushing performances in the Greater San Antonio area.
Hondo’s Ronald Blanks led the group with his second straight 200-yard game, picking up 239 yards on 26 carries and scoring two TDs in the Owls’ 25-0 victory over Jourdanton.
Blanks moved into the lead in the area with 915 yards.
James Sendejo of Southside ran 26 times for 237 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Cardinals’ 33-14 loss to Pleasanton.
Marshall’s Anthony Holmes scored on runs of 43, 63 and 93 yards, finishing with 227 yards on 13 carries in the Rams’ 27-14 victory over Madison. He added two receptions for 84 yards, including one for a score to finish with 311 yards total offense.
La Vernia’s Lilon Holder racked up 216 yards in the Bears’ 27-0 victory over Devine, giving him 869 this season.
George Collins of Southwest scooted for 209 yards and four TDs on 25 carries in the Dragons’ 41-7 victory over Laredo Martin.
South San’s Albert Herrera squeezed into the elite group with 200 yards on 41 carries. He scored the lone TD in the Bobcats’ 6-0 victory over McCollum.
