With four games remaining in the regular season, Alamo Heights quarterback Glenn Winship and Marshall tailback Anthony Holmes are on pace to finish with some impressive statistics. Winship is on pace to throw for over 3,000 yards and Holmes to rush for nearly 2,000 yards.
Winship has thrown just two interceptions while completing 106 of 168 passes for 1,838 yards through six games this season. The senior leads the area in passing yards and total offense, averaging 336.8 total yards per game.
Holmes has rushed for 1,149 yards on 113 attempts while seeing limited duty during most of the Rams’ first six games. The senior also has scored 18 touchdowns to lead the area in individual scoring.
Central Catholic continues to be among the offensive leaders in the area. Quarterback Keith McKinney is second in passing yardage with 1,278 and receiver Chris Marcinowski is fifth in receptions with 27.
Tony Darden of Holmes continues to be the leading passer (1,032 yards) among the city’s Class 5A quarterbacks.
Southside’s Jimmy Sendejo dropped from second to fourth in rushing after gaining just 10 yards in the Cardinals’ 50-6 loss to West Campus. Southside’s only touchdown was an 87-yard pass from Chris Ortiz to Tony Castano. The play was the longest touchdown pass this season.
Karnes City and Alamo Heights control the offensive team statistics.
Karnes City leads the area in scoring (47.3 points per game) and rushing (374 yards per game).
Alamo Heights leads the area in passing (318.2 yards per game) and total offense (417.7 yards per game).
Clark continues to lead the city’s 5A schools in rushing, averaging 326.7 yards per game.
Defensively, Antonian remains the leader in rushing defense. The Apaches have allowed opponents an average of 40 yards rushing.
Dilley is allowing opponents 2.2 points and 94.8 total yards per game, both tops in the area.
Marshall is tops among the city’s 5A schools, allowing just 7.5 points and 174.8 yards rushing per game.
South San is holding opponents to just 71.3 yards rushing this season.
AP football poll: Arlington Lamar remains No. 1 for the sixth consecutive week in the Associated Press Schoolboy Football Poll. Lamar received 246 points and 17 of 26 first-place votes to finish ahead of No. 2 Dallas Carter, which garnered 230 points and six votes for first.
Carter again was followed by Odessa Permian, Waco, San Antonio Marshall, Alief Elsik, Beaumont West Brook, Aldine, Huntsville and Jersey Village.
Bastrop retained its stronghold atop 4A with a 16-0 victory over Smithson Valley. The Bears, whose defense is allowing just 5.6 points per game, received 254 points and 20 first-place votes.
Houston C.E. King was No. 2, followed by McKinney, Waxahachie, Sulphur Springs, El Campo, Austin Westlake, Tomball, LaMarque and Wilmer-Hutchins.
Sinton kept its tenuous grip on the top ranking in 3 A, receiving 235 points to finish ahead of Southlake Carroll’s 229. Sinton got 14 votes for first to Carroll’s eight.
Boyd, the only debut team in the poll, was 10th in Class 3A after its 52-0 thrashing of Lake Worth.
Schulenburg and Garden City, the only teams to be top-ranked the entire season, were again the near-unanimous No. 1 choices in classes 2A and 1A, respectively. Schulenburg received 258 points and 24 first-place votes. Garden City got 252 points and 21 votes for first.
