Former professional athletes offer encouraging words to Southwest High School students

When the three former professional athletes spoke to students at Southwest High School Wednesday morning, they were speaking Jazmin Soberanes’ language.

There was Dick “Lefty” O’Neal, the only white player who pitched for two Negro League semi-pro baseball teams. His message to Soberanes and more than 250 fellow students Wednesday morning was simple: Don’t let the world box you in.

And Priest Holmes, former running back for the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs, who brought the excited students to their feet with an inspirational chant and encouraged them to give a hand to others in need.

And there was Rance Olison, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, the man who calls young people his “babies” as a term of endearment they readily accept. Olison had the teens stand and greet other attendees they didn’t know as an exercise in how easy it is to say a kind word to a stranger.
