When former NFL star Priest Holmes gave up running over linebackers and cornerbacks, he started running his own nonprofit organization, determined to “give back” to his community.

Holmes, a Marshall High School and Texas Longhorn graduate, played for 10 years in the NFL for the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs. Although he was a member of the Super Bowl-winning Ravens team of 2000, Holmes’ most productive seasons were with the Chiefs. From 2001-2003, he rushed for more than 1,400 yards each season and was 20-02’s NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

But a serious neck injury ended his career in 2007, sending him to the sidelines — and back to his communities, both his hometown of San Antonio and his “adopted” home, Kansas City.

By 2005, Holmes had launched the Priest Holmes Foundation, a charity whose mission is to provide incentive programs and scholarships for Bexar County graduating seniors.

Holmes hooked up with Divine Edge Barber Shop in Converse because its owner, Oscar Dean, used to cut Holmes’ hair many years ago.
