Like most NFL players, Priest Holmes learned to ball on the concrete, dodging cars and mail boxes while trying not to trip on the curb.
“I actually got my speed from these German Shepherds that lived down the street,” Priest once told me. “In order to get home, you had to get past that house, so it was it was either you or your behind. I always chose to outrun them, then jump the fence. That’s how I got the ability to run and jump into the end zone.”
These days, Priest has taken that end zone leap to unprecedented heights, shattering the single-season touchdown record in 2003, and before missing time due to injury, the man who likes to think of himself as the Bishop of the NFL, was actually on pace to break his own mark in 2004.
I recently took a trip to Kansas City to sit down with the best running back in the NFL to reminisce about the old days of street football, how he learned to fall, and, of course, NFL Street 2.
