Marshall running back Anthony Holmes was given medical clearance Monday to return to the Rams’ lineup for this week’s playoff game against Sam Houston.

Holmes, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior, was the state’s leading rusher in Class 5A before suffering a deep thigh bruise and missing the final four games of the regular season. Through six games, Holmes rushed for 1,149 yards on 113 carries and scored 18 touchdowns.

Rams coach David Visentine said Monday that he was unsure if Holmes would start against Sam Houston.

“Obviously, after missing four games, his conditioning will be a factor,” Visentine said. “Right now we have him penciled for spot duty, but we’ll see how he progresses this week.”

If Holmes is unable to start, Todd Siebert will again get the call at running back, according to Visentine.
