Marshall running back 5-10, 170, Senior Holmes rushed for 253 yards on 12 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead No. 1-ranked Marshall over 10th-ranked Edison, 47-0. Holmes, a two-year letterman, scored on runs of 26, 14, 35 and 92 yards. His 92-yard touchdown run in the third period was the longest from scrimmage this year.
“Anthony had an outstanding night,” Marshall coach David Visentine said. “Of course, it would have been an outstanding night for any player.”
In two games, Holmes has rushed for 486 yards on 37 carries, an average of 13.1 yards a pickup. And he has scored six touchdowns. “Anthony has worked extremely hard this year,” Visentine said. “A lot of people had a lot of high expectations of him coming into the season. I think he has pretty much lived up to those expectations.”
Holmes’ 26-yard run gave the Rams a 13-0 lead with seven minutes left in the first quarter. He added a 14-yard TD
run in the second quarter and a 35-yard TD run in the third quarter before the 92 yarder. “I just run,” Holmes said after the game. “The offensive line opened up some big holes. I give all the credit I get to the offensive line.”
DEFENSE BOBBY JACK RUSHING Seguin linebacker 5-11, 180, Senior Rushing led a Matadors defensive unit that held No. 8-ranked Austin Reagan to nine first downs and 150 yards in total offense in a 7-6 upset win. Rushing recorded a team-high 16 tackles and was involved in three of the Raiders’ six fumbles. It was the second straight game in which he has recorded that many tackles.
“That’s two weeks in a row that he has played an outstanding game for us,” Seguin coach Corky Nelson said. “And when you consider that he has only been here for two games, that’s truly outstanding.” Rushing is a transfer student from Kilgore. His father, Jack Rushing, was head coach at Kilgore before joining Nelson’s staff at Seguin.
The Matadors (1-1) stopped Reagan twice inside the 10-yard line. Both times, the Raiders fumbled after being hit by Seguin defenders.
“They were not non-contact fumbles,” Nelson said. “Each time our guys were right there to make the play. “Reagan has speed and size,” Nelson added. “They are a tough 4A team. “It was a good win for us against a tough opponent. Of course, we needed a win, period.”
