Marshall, playing without its leading rusher and three defensive starters, routed Jay, 28-16, in a District 28-5A contest Friday night at Northside Stadium.
The victory raised the Rams’ overall record to 7-0. Marshall, ranked fifth in the The Associated Press’ Class 5A rankings and first in the Express-News Greater San Antonio poll, is 2-0 in district play.
Jay is 1-6 and 0-2.
A crowd of 4,609 watched the Rams play without senior running back Anthony Holmes, whose 1,149 yards is second among the state’s 5A backs, and defensive backs Will Flowers, a junior, and Mark Futschik and Todd Siebert, both seniors.
Holmes missed the game with a right thigh bruise, an injury he suffered in the Rams’ victory over Madison Oct. 4. He played in Marshall’s victory over Holmes last week, but the player’s doctor advised him to miss Friday’s game.
Rams coach David Visentine suspended Flowers, Futschik and Siebert for disciplinary reasons. The three also will miss a district game with Southwest next week.
“It was a big win for us because we were short-handed,” Visentine said. “I thought the players that filled in did a tremendous job.”
Holmes said he plans to play against Southwest.
“I believe I’ll be able to play,” he said. “I got injured against Madison when I was tackled. I played last week, but the doctors asked me not to play in this game.”
The Rams held the Mustangs to one first down and 39 yards of total offense in the first half while building a 21-0 lead.Marshall led 28-0 after three periods, but Jay scored 16 unanswered points in the fourth to close the gap.
Running backs Curtis Ormond and Carlos Reza both scored two touchdowns each for the Rams. Ormond’s TDs covered 33 and 4 yards. Reza’s scores came on runs of 1 and 5 yards.
Mike Gann’s fumble recovery, which was caused by Mike Mazur’s hard hit, started the drive that ended with Ormond’s 4-yard run. Mazur later recovered a fumble, which began a march capped by Reza’s 5-yard run.
Reza finished with 72 yards on 19 carries. Casey Gonzales, who replaced Holmes, led all rushers with 78 yards on 15 carries.
Jason Briggs kicked four extra points for the Rams.
Jay’s points came on a 25-yard pass from Robert Stuckey to Quincher Price, a 25-yard return of a blocked punt by Rodney Buentello, a conversion pass from Stuckey to Price and a conversion run by Stuckey.
“I’ve got to hand it to Jay. They came back in the second half and gave us a scare,” Visentine said. “It was a typical District 28-5A game.”
Marshall took the opening kickoff and drove 76 yards in 10 plays to take a 7-0 lead. Ormond, 170-pound senior gained the final 33 yards of the drive and Briggs kicked the extra point.
A 10-yard pass from David Sammon to Jason Cox set up the Rams’ first touchdown, which came on a fourth-and-four play.
Marshall’s next scoring drive covered 56 yards and lasted 13 plays. Reza, a 212-pound junior, finished the drive with his 1-yard plunge, giving Marshall a 14-0 lead with five minutes left in the first half.
Marshall’s third scoring drive began when Gann recovered the fumble forced by Mazur. Two plays later, Ormond scored his second touchdown.
Mazur led a defensive charge that recorded four sacks for Marshall. Coming up with the traps were Crague Canion, Carl Junek and Mazur, who had two.
Jay scored twice in the fourth quarter and came close to scoring a third touchdown before Marshall’s defense stiffened.
The Mustangs had a first down at the Marshall 19 but lost 4 yards in four plays and Marshall took over with 22 seconds left.
Marshall got a scare in the third period when Junek left the game with an apparent shoulder injury. But the 6-foot-2, 270-pound senior returned to the game in the fourth period and appeared to be OK.
